IxD 350: What if...?

Assignment:
Think of 3 interesting and intriguing "what if" questions. Write each one out in one or two sentences.
Then pick the favorite of your "what if" scenarios. Write 3-4 paragraphs to tell us about the world it would be taking place in and the main character.
Include illustrations for each paragraph - those can be your drawings, photos, images found online, etc.
Post the results on your blogs that you created for your Studio 1 class.

  • What if there was a speaking device created to allow someone to translate a language in real time? This could range from ear devices to microphones, so that the speaker doesn’t have a wait time for their conversations to be translated.
  • What if there was a trash detecting robot or drone that can help clean our public recreational places such as beaches and parks? These devices would scan the area for any plastic, litter or food and dispose of them to a nearby trash area.
  • What if we had a more immersive invitation that allows invitees to attend the event remotely? The coordinators of the event can set a time duration, and those attending the event remotely can join as a holographic figure to view events, such as a graduation or a wedding.

It’s a Monday morning, and the sun has only risen for about an hour. All of a sudden, the stillness of Speyer Lane is disrupted by a draft created from a speeding bicycle. The bicycle comes to a screeching stop in front of a yellow house at the end of the street and is followed by a ding ding ding. The tiny human remains seated on the bike and yells, “Let’s go van Persie, we’re gonna be late!” The garage door suddenly opens up and a timid girl is seen holding her mother’s hand who reassures her daughter that everything will be okay and gives her daughter a tight hug. At this moment, the girl on the bicycle turns on her speaker and starts playing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” as a smile appears on van Persie’s face as she gets on her bike. The two girls bike off as they get ready to tackle their first day of elementary school. The two girls kept this daily bike ride to school for the next twelve years.

Sophia van Persie and Jenny Peterson were friends from the minute they were born. Their mothers were teammates for UCLA’s volleyball team and remained friends beyond graduation. Their parents even moved to the same street of Redondo Beach, California. Although they have spent almost every minute of their lives together, they could not be anymore different. Sophia was always a fan of pottery and books and is part of her school’s ceramic and book club. A perfect day for Sophia is having the whole pottery studio to herself while listening to bossa nova. On the other hand, Jenny is the captain of her school’s volleyball team and vice president of the student body council. Her schedule is packed with meetings and practices, and she loves every minute of it. Despite their differences, calling Sophia and Jenny best friends was an understatement as the two were always almost seen together, whether in classes or supporting one another in their events. Their families often have dinner and vacations together. So, when it came to their senior year, it only made sense that both girls applied for their same dream school, UCLA, like their mothers. Except it is now late April of senior year, and Sophia and Jenny are seen crying while sitting next to each other on the curb in front of Jenny’s house. Although Sophia has been accepted to UCLA, Jenny has given the bittersweet news that she has accepted the offer to play for a professional volleyball team in Denmark. It is now the last day of summer after high school graduation. Sophia tightly hugs Jenny with tears streaming down and watches her step into the airlines. As she drives back home, we softly hear the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” playing on the radio.

Flash forward to ten years later, Sophia, who is now a new pottery studio owner in Los Angeles, receives a letter in the mail. The invitation was for the wedding of Jenny and her fiance Gabriel, which would take place in Denmark. Although Sophia was thrilled for her friend, she was unsure if she could afford plane tickets to Denmark since the tickets were expensive and she is just starting her new business. But at the end of her invitation, she finds an option to attend remotely through a company called N’Synced. She picks the option and is soon sent a package with devices to wear and set up on Jenny’s wedding day. Although nervous, Sophia is excited to be able to participate in the wedding.

On the sunny afternoon of Jenny’s wedding in Denmark, Sophia sets up her N’Synced devices in her studio to attend the ceremony remotely. As she watches Jenny walk down the aisle, radiant in her wedding gown, Sophia is overcome with joy and nostalgia, reflecting on their lifelong friendship. As Jenny and Gabriel exchange their vows, Sophia raises a glass of sparkling cider in a toast, whispering her congratulations to the screen. The reception is filled with laughter and dancing, and Sophia feels the distance between them melt away. Even though she is thousands of miles away, the bond she shares with Jenny is as strong as ever. As the night winds down and the feed fades, Sophia smiles, feeling a profound sense of connection and gratitude for their enduring friendship.
